Why isn't my website showing up on Google?
You search for your own business and there you are, eventually. Page two. Or you search for what you sell in your town, and your competitors show up while you don't. It feels personal. It isn't. It's almost always mechanical, and the mechanics can be checked.
The common causes, roughly in order
- Google can't read the basics. Every page has a title and a short description that Google uses to understand and display it. A surprising number of sites are missing them, or have the same one on every page. When Google has to guess, it guesses cautiously.
- The site is slow or awkward on phones. Google openly ranks sites partly on speed and mobile experience. A site that frustrates phone visitors gets shown less, no matter how good the business behind it is.
- The rules changed after your site was built. This is the one owners rarely hear about. What was fine in 2018 can count against you now. Sites don't get told when they slip. They just do, quietly, over years.
- Nothing links to you. Google partly judges sites by who mentions them. A site no other site links to is a stranger with no references.
- Thin or stale content. If your whole site is five sentences and a phone number, Google has little to work with. If it hasn't changed in four years, that says something too.
What "fixing SEO" actually means for a small business
Ignore anyone promising page one overnight. For most local businesses it means getting the basics genuinely right: pages Google can read, a site that loads fast on phones, real words about what you do and where, and time.
Find out which one is your problem
The first three causes above are testable in about a minute. A free SiteMOT checks how Google's own tools see your site, including the search basics, and tells you plainly what's there and what's missing. It won't fix your rankings on its own. It will tell you where to start, which is the part most owners never get.
